Prominent theatre troupes Prachyanat, Nagorik Natya Sampradaya, Aranyak Natyadal, Swapnadal, Meghdoot, Theatre, Batighar and others have planned to bring a new and intriguing set of theatrics to the stage as well for the year 2024 as well.

Prachyanat stages ‘Koinya’ at Mohila Samity after long hiatus

The popular Prachyanat drama “Koinya” is going to be staged on the stage of Bangladesh Mohila Samity in the Bailey Road area, after a long hiatus. The play will be screened tomorrow (November 18) at 7 pm. Murad Khan wrote the drama about the naïveté of the Sylhet-Sunamganj Haor area while it was directed by Azad Abul Kalam.

A stirring tale in ‘Aagunjatra’

In a tapestry woven with intrigue and human complexity, the play "Aagunjatra" by Indian playwright Mahesh Dattani, adapted and directed by Azad Abul Kalam, is set to command the spotlight at the Examination Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA) on November 10. Representing the 41st presentation by Prachyanat, this theatrical endeavour delves into the intricate lives of hijras, offering a poignant exploration led by the character Uma.

Prachyanat’s ‘Khwabnama’ to be staged tomorrow

The play is an adaptation from the famous novel of the same name, authored by the eminent novelist Akhteruzzaman Elias. The plot is a comprehensive narrative of the lives of people during the partition in 1947. Through this story, the novelist has brought out the life and reality of the time with a skillful hand.

The festival included four exhibitions, namely Made in Bangladesh by Prachyanat, Voices of Bangladesh by iCan Foundation, Moheshkhali Exhibition by University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh and Hum Studio Interactive, and Auyoni: Beyond Sexuality by Ayreen Khan which were displayed at Gallery 1 of the BSA.

The play tells the story of a transgender person, Kamala, who is in a relationship with the son of a minister. When the minister learns about this relationship, he arranges for Kamala to be murdered. Later, they frame another transgender person, Anarkali, for the murder of Kamala.

I found myself looking for him beyond the pages of Elias's novel, among the old men who beg on the streets of Dhaka, or in the madman lying on the footpath, trying to say something  in a huff or lost in a hallucination on the open road.
