Human Rights Summer School organised by ELCOP

This year, the 22nd  Human Rights Summer School (HRSS) has been organised by Empowerment through Law of the Common People (ELCOP) in Proshika HRDC, Manikganj from 17th to 28th October 2023.

This event was led by Professor Dr. Mizanur Rahman, Director, Bangladesh Institute of Law and International Affairs (BILIA), and the director of the summer school was Dr. S M Masum Billah, Dean, Faculty of Law, Jagannath University, Dhaka. The theme of the event was "Human Rights and Human Security". In total 42 law students from different law schools of Bangladesh and 6 international participants from Nepal, participated in HRSS this year.

The two-week long residential program include class lectures, group exercises and brainstorming, group presentation, fact-finding simulation, community visit and collection of data, mooting etc. The learning modules of HRSS are designed based on the model of the University of Oxford which goes beyond conventional legal studies. The clinical method of legal education is followed by HRSS which helps the participants develop new insights into different areas within the legal fields.

Honorable Chief Justice of Bangladesh Justice Obaidul Hassan was the Chief Guest at the "Inauguration Ceremony" of 22nd HRSS this year and Honorable Attorney General for India R. Venkaramani was the Chief Guest at the "Valedictory Ceremony". Professor Dr. Mizanur Rahman, Dr. Aastha Dahal, Professor Dr Rahmat Ullah, Adv. Prajwal Raj Gyawali, Mr. Advocate ASM Sayem Ali Pathan, Dr. Zahra Golshani, Dr. Ivneet Kaur Walia, Manmay Zafar, Prof. (Dr.) S. Sivakumar, Dr. Sharin Shajahan Naomi, Saleh Mohmmad Shafi, Assistant Protection Officer, UNCHR and many other esteemed legal scholars, advocates, judges from home and abroad had conducted the insightful sessions throughout the summer school program.
