Dhaka University Day celebrated
The 102nd founding anniversary of Dhaka University, the oldest university in the country, has been celebrated amidst much fanfare and festivities.
DU Vice Chancellor Prof Akhtaruzzaman inaugurated the daylong programme at 10:00am today by hoisting the national and university flags at the university's Teacher Student Centre (TSC) premises. He also released balloons and cut cake on the occasion.
A procession attended by present and former students, teachers and staff of the university also paraded the streets of the DU campus.
Later, a discussion was held at Teacher-Student Center (TSC) auditorium at 10:30am with DU VC in the chair.
DU Pro-VC (Academic) Prof ASM Maksud Kamal, Pro-VC (Administration) Prof Dr Muhammad Samad, Treasurer Professor Dr Mamtaz Uddin Ahmed, DU teachers' association's general secretary Prof Zeenat Huda, among others, addressed the programme as guests.
Dhaka University started its academic activities on July 1, 1921, with 12 departments, three faculties, 60 teachers, 877 students, and three residential halls. It was built on about 600 acres of land.
The country's largest university now consists of 83 departments, 13 faculties, 12 institutes, 56 research bureaus and centres, 37018 students, and 1,992 teachers.
Since its inception, Dhaka University has made significant contributions to the development of the country.
